DVB-H is a European transmission standard for mobile multimedia broadcasting, and planed to be deployed not only in Europe, but also in several Asian and African countries. Since DVB-H is mainly designed for delivering IP packets over terrestrial broadcast networks, other service layer specifications over DVB-H are required for supporting IP-based service applications. Currently, two service layer specifications are available over DVB-H, and they are the OMA BCAST 1.0 specification and the DVB-IPDC phase 1 specification. In fact, the data-plane protocols of the two specifications for delivering both AV streams and files are almost the same, and could be easily harmonized. However, the control-plane protocols of the two specifications are of more difference, such as the service description and discovery frameworks, and the service and content protection frameworks. In this paper, we compare the service description and discovery frameworks of the two specifications -- the OMA BCAST Service Guide and the DVBIPDC ESG (Electronic Service Guide), and highlight similarities and differences that are worth noting. |
