Title
Tangible Augmented Reality and Engineering Product Dissection.
Abstract
Function-based design in engineering is an abstract approach to model the design space and to explore different design solutions. However, research results indicate that engineers and designers struggle to create function diagrams, especially when performing certain tasks such as product dissection. Augmented reality along with tangible objects can blend design aspect models such as the shape and topology in one AR presentation of the product and allow one to gain a better understanding of a product’s functionality. We designed an AR application prototype that superimposes shape, functional groups, and component names onto a project of interest, which facilitates function diagram development and the understanding of the product’s functionality.
