•We propose an efficient hybrid heuristic for the Team Orienteering Problem (TOP).•Our heuristic method is based on an adaptive large neighborhood search.•The proposed heuristic outperforms existing solution approaches.•We identify 1 new best solution from a large-scale instance set.•Our method identifies all best-known solutions for small/large benchmark instances.
